Frans matriculated at Gill College in Somerset-East in 1988, whereafter he obtained the qualifications B.Comm and LL.B at the University of Stellenbosch in 1991 and 1993 respectively. During 2002, Frans obtained a post-graduate diploma in advanced labour law at the University of Johannesburg (formerly RAU).

After graduating from Stellenbosch, Frans commenced his career as a candidate attorney at Vosloo & Nolte (now Nolte Smit) in Somerset East, and during 2000, he became a partner in the firm after establishing the Cradock office of the firm. Frans’s main areas of practice are Labour Law, Commercial Litigation and General Commercial Transactions.

Frans and his family reside in Cradock, where he heads the Cradock office. During his leisure time, Frans is an avid athlete and has numerous Comrades and Two Oceans marathons to his credit. Frans has also completed the Fish River Canoe marathon on a number of occasions.
